5th Annual Black History Celebration and Basketball Game

An outstanding evening of family fun and basketball in celebration of black history month. At 5:30 pm there will be a pre-game discussion, "Girls Got Game". We will take an intriguing look into early female basketball players and fashions, followed by a tantalizing discussion on the present and future of women in basketball and sports.
At 7:00 PM the Falls Church City All-Star Team (made up of elected officials, business persons, parents, students & the local community) will play New York Cities finest, the Harlem MagicMasters! The game is fun, exciting and “edu-taining.” If you love basketball, fun, laughter or history you won’t want to miss this!
"Girls Got Game" Pre-game discussion
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM
A fun look at women in the early days of basketball. Includes a slide show of vintage "ladies" basketball fashions and the early "ladies" basketball rules. Special invited guests will discuss the challenges, victories, experiences, "roles" and opportunities for women in basketball and sports today.

A Step Back in Time: Heritage Walking Tour
3:00 pm, Each Saturday during Black History Month, Feb.6,13, 20 and 27
A Step Back in Time is a walking tour that explores the history of Falls Church's African American communityfocusing on the 19th and early 20th century. This one and a half-mile-long easy walk is a fascinating trip through the past. As we walk the back streets of Falls Church, cross the main thoroughfares, visit historic cemeteries and little known enclaves, the past will come alive! Did you know that at one point African American residentsmade up nearly 40% of the population of the town of Falls Church? What was life like in Falls Church then?
Your guide will share points of interest and historical highlights of Falls Church. Learn about little known events that took place in Falls Church and influenced the nation! The walk ends at the Henderson House, the 1913 home of educators and early civil rights advocates, Dr. Edwin and Mrs. Mary Ellen Henderson, affectionately called "Miss Nellie", the Mary Ellen Henderson Middle Schoolwas named in her honor. We will gather inside to for music, light refreshments, hot drinks and enjoy, in the words of Miss Nellie "a bit of pound cake and a glass of wine to warm your bones after a long walk."

New Year’s Eve Watch Night Celebration
This event, which is co-sponsored with the City of Falls Church, is a free, fun New Years Eve celebration featuring top area live musicians along with food, fun, games, dancing and other unique presentations.
It's Fun - It's FREE - New Years Eve. 8:00 pm – Midnight at the crossroads of Broad Street (Route 7) & Washington Street (Route 237 or 29 or Lee Highway). Live music, family fun and entertainment!

E.B. Henderson “Dear Editor” Contest
Entries due the last day of April each year. Awards presented at the Tinner Hill Festival Second Saturday of June each year. Open to all middle and high school students in Northern Virginia, co-sponsored by the Washington Post. Over a fifty year period, more than 3,000 letters to editors by Dr. E. B. Henderson were published defending civil liberties and the value of ethnic diversity. To encourage today’s youth to share the same passion for writing, public discourse, and critical thinking THHF initiated the E. B. Henderson Dear Editor Contest. The contest is underwritten by the Washington Post with more than $2,500 in cash prizes awarded annually.
The contest is open to Northern Virginia middle and high school students, including age-appropriate home schoolers.
